Gay Africa CDr EP

Our friends at Thor's Rubber Hammer have released Gay Africa's debut, the CDr EP Pizzaze!, which I recorded at the 40 Watt earlier this year. Lars at TRHP says:

Gay Africa is yet another Dark Meat offshoot, this time a foursome led by the long-haired nuke-jammer Jim McHugh. Bedded with the drone of an electronic raagini, Gay Africa completely improvises “Dream Cables,” a 20-minute raga-rocker recorded live at the 40 Watt in Athens, Geo., by Sloan Simpson. Jim’s in Richard-Thompson-channeling-Ravi-Shankar mode, with Emily Armond (flute), Theodore Tutu (trumpet) and Jason Robira (drums) kicking up the dirt and celebrating the spirits. The packaging is really something on this one, too. Each copy is entirely unique: hand-painted by Kate Burnet on reused, cut-up vinyl jackets. The insert is an origami fortune teller folded from old maps. These took a long time to make, but were so worth the wait. Hand-numbered edition of 150.

A sample is available at TRHP.

Elephant 6 Orchestra @ Cine 10/7/08

The Elephant 6 Orchestra began their Holiday Surprise tour at Cine. The collective play material from many of their members' projects and the tour gives people outside Athens their best chance in years to catch this many of the players at the same time.

A note on the recording: this is only the first set of the evening. The room acoustics were so bad to my ears that I left at the setbreak; I literally couldn't hear what was going on with the music through large portions on the show. That said, my microphones were a few feet higher than my ears, and the recording was more listenable than I expected. It's still not the greatest recording (I have "mastered" it to extract the goodness from the mud as much as possible), but I thought it may be worth a listen for those who attended, as well as people who won't have a chance to see any of the tour. Song titles are followed by the name of the original artist.

Track 1 - His Mister's Pet Whistles [Major Organ And The Adding Machine]
Track 2 - Neon Globe [Circulatory System]
Track 3 - Yesterday's World [Circulatory System]
Track 4 - Love Athena [Olivia Tremor Control]

Notes

If you're looking for the Elephant 6 Orchestra set from last night, I don't think the recording will come out to be listenable. The room acoustics conspired against us, it happens.

Also the Stereolab show from the 40 Watt needs to be approved before I can post, so that is a medium-term project.
