David Barbe & The Quick Hooks @ Athfest Hull St. Stage 6/28/09

David Barbe’s Quick Hooks still haven’t released their long-awaited album, but it’s apparently finished.  This Athfest set contains exclusively songs from that new record.

I forgot to mention when I posted the Patterson/Screwtopians show Monday that Barbe sings “Manna From Above”, an unreleased Buzz Hungry song.

Track 1 – Where The Miracles Are Gone
Track 2 – My Shiny Bird
Track 3 – Peel Away
Track 4 – In The Weeds
Track 5 – Your Metal Confine
Track 6 – Mole In The Gutter
Track 7 – Broadcast Spreader

The Wydelles @ Caledonia 6/26/09

[Looks like it's approximately Southern Shelter's 3rd anniversary, so I'll try to post five shows this week instead of my usual two]

The Wydelles are calling it a day, as guitarist Philip McArdle is leaving Athens.  He’s a good one; good luck Philip.  This final show features the debut of two new songs.

Track 1 – Alone
Track 2 – Talk Shows
Track 3 – So Long Smokes
Track 4 – Hello Texas Girls
Track 5 – Chromeplate
Track 6 – San Diego
Track 7 – Old Demons

Bloodkin @ Athfest Main Stage

Bloodkin nabbed the Flagpole award for Best Album and tore up the Athfest Main Stage in the same weekend.  I’ve been seeing Bloodkin and evangelizing about ‘em for about 15 years, and couldn’t be more pleased that they’re finally getting wider notice.

Track 1 – Wait Forever
Track 2 – Little Margarita
Track 3 – Easter Eggs
Track 4 – My Name Is Alice
Track 5 – Ghost Runner
Track 6 – You Better Pray
Track 7 – Wet Trombone Blues
Track 8 – Henry Parsons Died

Patterson Hood & The Screwtopians @ Athfest 6/27/09

Time for Athfest!

If you live in Athens you should be well aware, but those of you in the surrounding areas should make your way to Athfest this weekend.  There’s three days or FREE music on the outdoor stages, followed by a “club crawl” featuring dozens of Athens acts in all the venues (all accessible with a wristband; the best value of the year for Athens music).

I’ll be replenishing the Southern Shelter vaults with as many shows as I can attend before exhaustion.  Monday will probably be an off-day as I recover, but will be back full-strength by mid-week.

John Fernandes @ Caledonia 5/13/09

John Fernandes (Circulatory System, Olivia Tremor Control, many more) appears solo, playing violin and clarinets over home-recorded tapes.

Track 1 – I
Track 2 – II

Barbara Cue @ Georgia Theatre 5/3/02

Georgia Theatre Burns

Sadly, Athens’ historic Georgia Theatre was engulfed in a major fire this morning.  No injuries have been reported, but early reports indicate a likely total loss.  Check Flagpole for ongoing coverage.  My heart goes out to the Theatre staff and owner Wilmot Greene, who has steadily made improvements to the venue over the last several years.
