Quick Break

I'm feeling a little lazy this week (and pollen-logged as well) so I'll think I'll take a blog break. Look for something new Monday.

Finest Worksongs

I want to point out the the Finest Worksongs CD is out now. Athens bands performing R.E.M. songs at a tribute show held at the 40 Watt, with R.E.M. members themselves guesting in spots. The show and sales of the CD benefit Community Connection Of Northeast Georgia and Athens Family Connection/Communities In Schools. The CD also has a track from Liz Durrett recorded by myself (!) later at The EARL in Atlanta (Liz was ill for the 40 Watt show, leaving an opening for R.E.M. to do a couple songs at their own tribute).

Out-Of-Towners: Castanets @ Caledonia 3/10/07

Castanets (Brooklyn) features the haunting songs of Ray Raposa, washing in and out of crashing noise excursions. I've been stuck on the album First Light's Freeze for quite a while, and suggest it strongly.

Neal Pattman @ Georgia Theatre 4/14/01

From Music Maker Relief Foundation: "Nobody made moonshine, worked a cakewalk, chopped wood or played a harmonica like Neal Pattman (1926-2005).

Losing an arm in a wagon wheel at the age of nine didn't slowed him at all. "66 years ago the Blues knocked on my door and they wouldn't leave."

His testimony can be heard in a sound and a style his daddy taught him as a child in the country outside Athens, Georgia."
